Hash is made from trichomes, the small resin glands that cover the buds and the leaves close to them. A strain that produces a thick layer of resin gives you more to collect from the same harvest. Harvest at the right moment
For hash, timing is about the trichomes, not the calendar. Use a loupe or a clip-on lens and look at the resin heads on the buds. Clear heads are not ready yet. Milky heads are close. When some turn amber, most growers harvest. The trim from around the buds, the small sugar leaves, is full of resin as well, so keep it for hash instead of throwing it away.
Ways to make hash at home
The simplest method is dry sifting: rub dried buds or trim gently over a fine screen and collect the kief that falls through. Many grinders have a kief chamber that does the same on a small scale. Ice water hash, often called bubble hash, uses ice, water and filter bags to knock off the trichomes, which you then dry. Rosin is pressed out with heat and pressure.
