Growing marijuana from seeds can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Just follow these simple steps and you’ll be growing your own, cannabis in no time!
Step 1: Decide what type of seeds you want.
If it’s your first time growing we recommend using autoflower seeds. These genetics are on automatic, so no matter where you’re growing them, they will automatically go into flowering without you having to adjust lighting schedules.
Types of Seeds
Type of Seeds | Ease of Growth | Description |
---|---|---|
Autoflower | Easy | Automatic flowering, just plant, water, and wait. |
Feminized Seeds | Medium | These seeds are for intermediate growers, you will have to trigger the flowering stage unless growing outside. |
Regular Seeds | Hard | These seeds are the hardest to grow because they are not all female, which means that you have a 50/50 chance of getting a male plant, which is only great for breeding. |
You also have to decide what strain to get, if high THC strains are your thing, here are our recommendations:
High THC strains for beginners
Strain Name | Strain Type | THC Level | Indica/Sativa |
---|---|---|---|
Northern Lights XTRM | Autoflower | 20 – 30% | 70% / 30% |
White Widow XTRM | Autoflower | 20 – 30% | 60% / 40% |
Black Domina | Feminized | 20 – 30% | 95% / 5% |
Step 2: Decide where you want to grow.
Do you want to grow indoors or outdoors? Depending on your answer you’ll want to choose one strain over the other.
If you want to grow outdoors, check out this chart to find seeds that will grow now in your climate. If you want to use autoflower seeds, this is not a big concern, just make sure the temperature is not too cold or too hot for the seeds you choose. See how to get big buds with autoflower seeds.

Step 3: Germinate your seeds!
Now that you’ve gotten your seeds discreetly delivered to your home thanks to our super discrete shipping, it’s time to germinate your seeds.
Germinating your seeds is a key part of the process, luckily AMS seeds boast one of the highest germination rates in the industry. We recommend the paper towel method, which is quick and easy.
Healthy sprout, healthy plant!
Step 1: First, dampen a paper towel with distilled water and put it on a plate. | |
Step 2: Carefully spread the seeds out on the paper towel and cover them with another dampened paper towel. Do not touch the seeds directly with your fingers. Then cover the plate with another plate. You can use a rubber band to make sure the plates are tight, so moisture does not evaporate. Put the plates with the seeds in a warm place. | |
Step 3: Open the plates once a day to check if the taproots are starting to emerge from the seeds. When the taproots are 1-2cm long (not more) then it’s time to plant your seeds. Once your seeds have germinated, plant them in your soil of choice. You will get better results if your soil is aerated, meaning that it’s fluffy and light, not compact and heavy. |
Step 4: Vegetative & flowering stages
The vegetative phase is when your plant does the most growing, the plant focuses its energy on growing roots, branches, stems, and leaves. The flowering state is when the plant focuses its energy on growing big fat buds (flowers) If you chose autoflower genetics you don’t have to worry about switching the plant from vegetative to flowering phases, it will do so automatically.
If you did not choose autoflower seeds, you will have to trigger the flowering stage. The plant will start to flower when the days get shorter in the autumn. If your plants are outside, they will flower as the season’s change. If they are indoor plants, simply switch the light schedule to 12 hours of darkness and 12 hours of light and your plant will start to flower.
Step 5: Harvest your weed!
Now it’s time to harvest your weed! This is when your work pays off, did you know you can get up to 1150 grams or 40.6 ounces per square meter? Follow our quick Harvesting Guide. If you want a HEAVY harvest, here are our recommended strains for beginners:
